Can a debt collector contact me on weekends or holidays?

In Washington, a debt collector cannot contact you on weekends or holidays. This is due to the fact that the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is in effect in Washington and this law specifically states that debt collectors must not contact consumers at any unusual time or place that is known to be inconvenient. This includes weekends and holidays. However, a debt collector may still be able to contact you on Sundays and holidays if it is requested by the consumer or if the debt collector has reason to believe that the consumer might be difficult to contact during regular business hours. If a debt collector does contact you on a weekend or holiday, you can file a complaint with the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. Be sure to keep records of all communication between you and the debt collector so that you can provide evidence if necessary. In general, it is always best to communicate with debt collectors during regular business hours when possible. This can help to ensure that all communications are done efficiently and that your rights are not violated.
