Can a debt collector contact me if I’m on a debt repayment plan?

Yes, a debt collector can contact you while you are on a debt repayment plan. In California, debt collectors must follow the state’s debt collection laws. According to state laws, debt collectors have the right to contact you in order to collect the debt, but they cannot do so in an abusive, deceptive, or unfair manner. If you are on a debt repayment plan with the collector (or agree to a repayment plan later on), the debt collector is allowed to contact you to discuss your payments, to request payment, and to discuss the terms of the repayment plan. However, they cannot contact you more than twice a week or call before 8:00 am or after 9:00 pm. They also cannot contact you at work or contact other people about your debt. It’s important to remember that even if you are on a repayment plan with a debt collector, they are still legally allowed to take legal action against you if you fail to make payments, such as filing a lawsuit. California has laws in place to protect consumers from abusive and unfair debt collection practices. If you feel like you’re being treated unfairly by a debt collector, you can report the collector to the California Department of Business Oversight.
