What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The ADA was enacted in 1990 and ensures Americans with disabilities receive equal access to programs and services. It also applies to employment, public services and transportation, making it illegal to discriminate against individuals with disabilities in any of these areas. In Virginia, the American with Disabilities Act means that employers cannot refuse to hire someone because of a disability nor can they discriminate against someone because of a disability during the hiring process or in any other aspect of the workplace. Employers must also make reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities in order to allow them the same opportunities for employment and advancement. Public services, such as public buildings and transportation, must also provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. This includes having accessible entrances to buildings, providing accessible parking spots, and appropriately equipped elevators and ramps. Additionally, transportation providers must give equal access to services to individuals with disabilities. Overall, the Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal law that protects individuals with disabilities from being discriminated against in any public accommodations and services or in the workplace. It requires employers and service providers to furnish reasonable accommodations so that people with disabilities can enjoy the same access and opportunities as others.
