What is an interactive process?
An interactive process is a key component of disability law in Virginia. It involves individuals with disabilities, their family members, and qualified professionals who collaborate to identify and provide appropriate accommodations for the individual. At its core, the interactive process is designed to ensure that individuals with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities to access education, employment, and other essential services as individuals without disabilities. The interactive process begins with an individual or a representative of an individual submitting an accommodation request. After that, training, medical documentation, and other documents may be requested in order to determine the best accommodations for the individual. The interactive process doesn’t end there. The team of individuals involved must then discuss how the individual can best access and participate in the chosen activity. This includes agreeing on reasonable adjustments and implementation strategies. The purpose of the interactive process is to ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided with the same opportunities as individuals without disabilities. It is also an important tool for preventing discrimination and for helping individuals with disabilities achieve their individual goals and objectives. In Virginia, the interactive process is a key component of disability law and must be taken into consideration when creating and implementing accommodations.
