What is an employment nondiscrimination law?
Employment nondiscrimination laws exist to protect individuals from discrimination based on age, race, disability, gender, and other characteristics. In Virginia, the Virginia Human Rights Act (VHRA) is the primary law that prohibits discrimination in public and private employment. This Act is enforced by the Virginia Division of Human Rights (DHR). The VHRA makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against applicants or employees on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, disability, or veteran status. It also protects individuals from retaliation for filing a complaint of discrimination or participating in a discrimination investigation or lawsuit. Employment nondiscrimination laws also require employers to provide reasonable accommodations to make it possible for individuals with disabilities to do their job. This could include making office spaces accessible, providing special equipment, changing policies or procedures, or offering modified work schedules. Employment nondiscrimination laws are important because they promote equal access to employment opportunities and protect workers from unfair treatment. Such laws can protect both employers and employees by limiting lawsuits and promoting a safe and equitable workplace.
