What are the rights of persons with disabilities?
Persons with disabilities have numerous rights that are protected by Washington Human Rights Law. These rights allow them to receive the same treatments and opportunities as those without disabilities. Under Human Rights Law, persons with disabilities are protected from discrimination in a variety of settings including employment, housing, education, and public services. This means that employers, landlords, and service providers cannot deny someone a job, an apartment, or access to a public service just because they have a disability. Moreover, businesses and organizations are legally required to provide reasonable accommodations and modifications to ensure access to everyone with disabilities. Washington Human Rights Law also prohibits employers, landlords, and service providers from asking about the disability of an individual unless this information is necessary for providing the appropriate accommodations and modifications. Furthermore, it is illegal to segregate or isolate people with disabilities from participating in any public activities. Beyond these rights, persons with disabilities have the right to have their medical information kept private; they have the right to access healthcare; they have the right to be free from abuse, neglect, or exploitation; they have the right to be informed of their rights; and they have the right to make informed decisions about their own lives. Ultimately, Washington Human Rights Law ensures that everyone with a disability is treated with respect and dignity.
