What is international law?

International law is a set of rules, standards, and principles that regulate the conduct of entities in international relations. Generally speaking, international law is concerned with the rights and duties of nations, and how they interact with other states. In more specific terms, international law governs topics such as war, the environment, trade, and diplomatic relations. On a domestic level, international law can be applied in the form of treaties, agreements, and conventions. In California, international law is a growing area of study, both for private and public institutions. Private law schools, such as Stanford and University of California, offer courses on international law. Additionally, the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of San Diego have LLM programs (Master of Laws) in International Law. Public institutions, such as the California Department of Justice, are responsible for enforcing state laws, and they must abide by international law as well. Furthermore, the United States government relies heavily on international laws; they will enter into treaties, conventions, and agreements with foreign states. Overall, international law is an evolving and complex legal field that is of great importance. As globalization increases, nations must be able to maintain relations and uphold international norms, and the best way to achieve that is through international law.
