What is the International Court of Justice?
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial arm of the United Nations (UN). The ICJ is the successor to the Permanent Court of International Justice, which operated between 1922 and 1946. The ICJ is located in The Hague in the Netherlands and consists of 15 judges who are elected by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council. The ICJ is often referred to as the "World Court" and is the highest body of international law. It has jurisdiction over disputes between states, such as those related to international agreements, boundaries, human rights, international crimes, and the use of force. The ICJ hears cases that are brought to it by states, which agree to accept its decisions as legally binding. In North Carolina, the ICJ is especially important as it is the main body that settles disputes between states. For instance, the ICJ can decide when multiple states are in dispute over territory or resources. Likewise, the ICJ can act as a court of appeals for individuals who need a judgement from the highest body of international law. Ultimately, the ICJ is an important institution in North Carolina and all around the world. It provides a reliable means to settle conflicts between states and to make sure that international law is enforced.
