What is the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)?

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is a United Nations treaty that was adopted in 1979. It is the most comprehensive international agreement addressing the rights of women and girls. CEDAW seeks to eliminate discrimination against women in all areas of life, including in education, work, marriage, health care, and other social aspects. This treaty is legally binding on the countries that have signed and ratified it. CEDAW covers a wide range of topics, from eliminating gender-based discrimination in education and employment to prohibiting child marriage, racial and ethnic discrimination, and violence against women. It also requires equal access to health care, economic resources, and legal protection, and calls for the protection of women’s reproductive rights. In order to make sure that these rights are being protected, CEDAW established a monitoring committee of independent experts that examine each country’s progress in implementing the convention. In South Carolina, the CEDAW has not yet been formally adopted and there is no legislation that implements its provisions. However, South Carolina is a signatory to many international agreements that are similar to the CEDAW, such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. As a result, South Carolina is subject to the same obligations as all other countries that have ratified the CEDAW.
