What is the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings (TBT)?

The International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings (TBT) is an international agreement signed by more than 140 countries, including the United States (US), that seeks to coordinate and strengthen the legal mechanisms available to prevent, punish, and suppress terrorist bombings around the world. The agreement defines terrorist bombing as an attack on civilians or other non-combatants with the intent to cause loss of life or injury and/or significant destruction of public or private property. Under the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings, the US is required to take measures to criminalize terrorist bombings, either by incorporating the standards of the Convention into US law or by any other means at its disposal. The Convention also requires governments to cooperate internationally to prevent, suppress, and punish acts of terrorism through mutual legal assistance, extradition, and extradition of persons accused of terrorist bombings. The TBT is part of an ongoing effort to combat international terrorism, and its implementation has been of particular relevance in North Carolina in recent years.
