What is the International Convention against Apartheid in Sports (ICAS)?
The International Convention against Apartheid in Sports (ICAS) is an international agreement that seeks to eliminate all forms of discrimination in sport. The agreement was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1978, and has been signed by over 80 countries. The ICAS is intended to ensure the principles of equality and non-discrimination in sports. It prohibits countries from implementing race-, gender-, and religion-based sports practices, such as the barring of athletes of different races or genders from participating in the same event. It prohibits a state from preventing athletes from participating because of their race, religion, or gender. In addition, the ICAS prohibits discrimination in the selection of athletes, coaches, and referees for teams to compete in international sporting events. In South Carolina, the ICAS applies to any organized sporting event where the participants come from different countries. This includes activities such as the Olympics and other international tournaments. Any sports team or individual athletes coming from South Carolina should abide by the ICAS and ensure their practices comply with the agreement. This includes selecting athletes regardless of gender, race, or religion, and making sure athletes have equal opportunity to participate in the sporting event.
