What is the Law of the Sea Tribunal (ITLOS)?
The Law of the Sea Tribunal (ITLOS) is a legal dispute settlement body that arbitrates disputes between countries concerning their rights under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Tribunal is presided over by a panel of 21 judges from different countries and was established in 1996 by the United Nations Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). ITLOS is responsible for settling disputes between states on issues like the delineation of marine boundaries, navigation, pollution, protection of the marine environment, protection of economic and environmental interests, and fishing rights. The Tribunal handles disputes that arise out of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in all parts of the world, including the Pacific coastline of California. In California, ITLOS has jurisdiction over a variety of matters, such as disputes between landowners, issues concerning the protection of endangered species, and navigation. The Tribunal adjudicates all cases brought before it in accordance with international law, ultimately providing a fair and binding resolution that can be enforced in the domestic courts of California.
