How do I report unfair labor practices?

It is important to be educated on the labor relations laws in your state in order to report unfair labor practices. In Washington, employees have the right to report unfair wages, hours, or working conditions to the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I). Workers may file a complaint with the Department of Labor and Industries within three years of the alleged violation. First, document any evidence of the violation, such as time entries or emails. Next, fill out the L&I Complaint Form online. This form will ask for information about the alleged violation, your employer, and your contact information. You can also file a complaint by calling the L&I Resolve Center at 1-877-661-9803 or by mailing in the Complaint Form. If there is an ongoing violation, employees may request an investigation by L&I’s Industrial Relations Division. If the Division finds that an employer violated the labor law, a determination will be made and L&I will pursue the remedy with the employer. It is important to note that workers cannot be fired, demoted, or retaliated against for filing a complaint. Washington’s Whistleblower Protection Law protects workers who engage in activities related to the enforcement of labor and employment standards. L&I will investigate any claims of retaliation if it is reported.
