What is a union-sponsored health plan?
A union-sponsored health plan is a type of health insurance plan made available through a labor union to its members and often their families. These plans are provided through the union and are generally similar to other types of health insurance, with deductibles, co-pays and various coverage levels for different types of medical care. In California, union-sponsored health plans are regulated by the California Labor Code and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). These laws are designed to ensure that unions provide their members with quality health care coverage and protect the members from the plans from being misused. Union-sponsored health plans typically come with additional benefits, such as shorter wait times, lower prescription drug costs and incentives for healthy lifestyle activities. However, members may still be subject to the same coverage limits and restrictions as other types of health insurance plans. Additionally, union-sponsored health plans may sometimes be more expensive than other types of health insurance plans. In California, union-sponsored health plans are often referred to as Taft-Hartley plans, after the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 which regulates labor unions and their activities, including the provision of health care plans.
