What happens if I am approved for Social Security Disability but find a job?

If you are approved for Social Security Disability and find a job, you can still keep your benefits, but your earnings may affect the amount of your monthly check. In California, if you make more than a certain amount of money per month, Social Security may reduce your benefits. The amount of money you can make and still receive Social Security Disability is known as Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). The SGA limit for 2020 is $1,260 per month. If you make more than this amount, your Social Security Disability benefits may be reduced. You may also be eligible for work incentives, which allow you to continue to receive Social Security Disability benefits while you work and try to become financially independent. Some of these work incentives include the Trial Work Period, Impairment Related Work Expenses, and Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS). These work incentives can help you get back into the workplace and pay for any job-related expenses that you may have. It is important to keep track of how much you make and to report any changes in income or work status to Social Security. If you do not report these changes, you may be overpaid or face other consequences. It’s also important to make sure you meet the requirements for SSDI and to contact your local Social Security office if you have any questions.
