What is the minimum wage in my state?

The minimum wage in Virginia is currently $7.25 per hour for non-exempt employee, which is the same as the federal minimum wage. However, cities and counties may set a higher minimum wage for employees within their jurisdiction. For example, the City of Alexandria has their own minimum wage that is higher than the state and federal minimum wage. Additionally, some employers are allowed to pay a lower minimum wage than the state and/or federal minimum wage. An example of this is employers who are covered under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s motor carrier exemption. Most employees who work in Virginia must be paid at least the state and federal minimum wage, regardless of their occupation or the size of their employer. Employers must pay the employee the higher of the federal and state minimum wage, and employers who are covered under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s motor carrier exemption may pay their employee the lesser of the federal and state minimum wage. Employers are also required to provide their employees with certain benefits, such as overtime and paid sick leave, regardless of their minimum wage rate. The Virginia Wage and Hour Law applies to all employers and employees, regardless of their occupation or size. It is important for employees to understand their rights and for employers to understand their obligations under the law.
