What are the restrictions on paying workers under the age of 18?

In Mississippi, the Wage and Hour Law imposes certain restrictions on employers when it comes to paying employees under the age of 18. All employers must comply with federal laws regarding the minimum age of employment, the hours of employment, and the types of jobs that can be performed. For instance, employers may not hire workers under the age of 14 and, depending on the job, may not hire workers under 16. In addition, the FLSA Fair Labor Standards Act prohibits those under 16 from working in hazardous occupations. In Mississippi, minors may not work in manufacturing, mining, hazardous jobs, and certain other occupations. Minors under the age of 16 may not work more than 6 days in any week or more than 8 hours in any day. Employers must provide daily rest periods of at least 30 minutes for minors aged 14-15. Minors may not work more than 3 hours on a school day, 8 hours on a nonschool day, and 18 hours in a school week. They may not work more than 40 hours in a nonschool week or between 7 PM and 7 AM. In Mississippi, employers are required to pay employees under the age of 18 the federal minimum wage unless the employee is exempt from the federal law. Employers must comply with all federal and state laws regarding wages and hours for employees under the age of 18.
