What is the difference between overtime hours and double time?

Overtime hours and double time are two distinct types of wages that employers must pay their employees in accordance with Mississippi wage and hour laws. Overtime hours are compensated at one and a half times the regular pay rate for any hours worked beyond the standard 40-hour workweek. This means that if an employee’s normal hourly wage rate is $10 and they work 46 hours one week, they will be paid $15 an hour for the 6 hours of overtime. Double time is also paid at a rate of one and a half times the regular pay rate, but it is reserved for hours worked beyond 12 hours in one day or 8 hours on the seventh consecutive day of work in the same workweek. So, if the employee in the above example works 8 hours on the seventh consecutive day in the same workweek, they will be paid $15 an hour for the 8 hours of double time. Overall, the main difference between overtime hours and double time is that overtime hours are paid for hours worked beyond 40 in the workweek, while double time is paid for hours worked beyond 12 in one day or 8 on the seventh consecutive day. Both of these wages must be paid at a rate of one and a half times the regular pay rate.
