What are the requirements for reporting wages to the government?

In Virginia, employers must report wages to the government under the Wage and Hour Law. This requires employers to report employee hours, wages, and any deductions from an employee’s wages to the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI). The wage and hour law stipulates employers must pay employees at least the federal or state minimum wage, whichever is the higher rate. The employer must also keep accurate records of employee hours, wages earned, and deductions taken out of the employee’s wages. This information must then be reported to the DOLI on a quarterly basis. The information reported to the DOLI includes details of the employee such as the employee’s name, address and social security number; the employer’s name and address, the employee’s job title, and the total wages paid to the employee. Employers must also report any deductions taken from the employee’s wages, such as taxes, union dues, or health insurance. The Virginia Wage and Hour Law also requires employers to submit a W-2 form to the DOLI for each employee showing the employee’s wages and taxes taken out from his or her pay. Employers must also file an annual report (Form VA-2) to the DOLI detailing all wages and deductions taken from employees for the previous year. By ensuring employers abide by the requirements of the Virginia Wage and Hour Law, the state is able to ensure that employees are paid fairly and that employers are compliant with federal and state labor laws.
