What are the rules for paying overtime?

In Virginia, the state’s wage and hour laws require employers to pay overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a given week. For example, if an employee works 42 hours in a week, they must be paid overtime for the two extra hours. Overtime is calculated by multiplying the regular rate of pay by 1.5. For some employees, overtime pay is not required after 8 hours per day.
