What are the restrictions on working hours for minors?
In Virginia, minors, or individuals under 18 years of age, are subject to certain restrictions on working hours. Generally, minors are not allowed to work during school hours and must have at least a 3-hour break between the end of school and the start of their work shift. Furthermore, they are not allowed to work more than 18 hours per week during the school year or more than 40 hours a week during the summer months. Minors are not allowed to work on any day when school is scheduled. They are also not allowed to work between the hours of 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM during the school year and between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM during the summer. Certain exceptions may apply, such as if they are employed in agriculture or by their parents. Certain types of jobs are also off-limits for minors regardless of their age. These jobs include mining, manufacturing, logging, and any occupation that requires the use of dangerous power-driven machinery or tools. In order to ensure compliance and safety, minors must obtain a work permit from their school in order to begin any job. This permit will also outline any additional restrictions or rules they must follow during their employment.
