What is an accommodation request?
An accommodation request is a written request from an individual with a disability for modifications or services that would allow them to participate in an activity or access a benefit. This type of request often comes up in the workplace, when an employee needs a modification to their job duties, access to special equipment, or even a more accommodating work schedule. In California, all employers must provide reasonable accommodations to an employee with a disability, unless the accommodation would cause undue hardship to the employer. This obligation is set out in the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA). If a disability is interfering with someone’s ability to work or participate in an activity, accommodation requests should be made promptly. If a person with a disability is having difficulty accessing a public space or program, they may also submit an accommodation request to the facility for a reasonable modification. For example, someone in a wheelchair may request a ramp or accessible entrance to a facility. All accommodation requests should be taken seriously, and employers and facilities should respond to them promptly and professionally.
