What is an E-1 visa?
An E-1 visa is a type of visa that is available to people who are from a country that has a treaty of commerce and navigation with the United States. With an E-1 visa, people from these countries are able to come to the United States to work in a position that is related to international trade. This type of visa is commonly referred to as a “treaty trader visa” and it is available to people from countries such as Japan, Mexico, Australia, Korea, and Norway. In Washington, an E-1 visa holder is allowed to stay in the U.S. for up to two years and must renew their status every two years. They are also eligible to apply for an extension of their stay and to receive a visa for their spouse and children. An E-1 visa holder must be a qualified employee of an international trade company and be actively and primarily engaged in international trade. The employer must also be able to prove that the employee has sufficient skills and financial resources to support themselves during their stay in the U.S. An E-1 visa holder is allowed to work in the U.S. for the duration of their visa and can apply for permanent residency after they have been in the U.S. for a period of five years.
