How does Social Security define “disability”?

Social Security defines “disability” as an inability to work due to a physical or mental condition that has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or result in death. In order to be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits in Virginia, an individual must have a physical or mental condition that substantially limits their ability to work or do other daily activities. This disability may be due to issues such as mental illness, chronic diseases, or impairments that limit the ability to walk, see, or care for oneself. In order to receive Social Security Disability benefits, a person must provide medical evidence and financial information. This evidence must include medical records that describe the nature and severity of the disability, medical tests performed, and how long you have had the disability. Financial information must include work history, income, and assets owned. The Social Security Administration (SSA) also requires individuals to be “medically determinable” in order to be eligible for benefits. This means that a qualified doctor must confirm that an individual’s disability can be located through medical tests, examinations, or laboratory findings. SSA must also determine that an individual’s disability meets or equals a condition listed in its “Blue Book” before benefits can be granted. Once all eligibility requirements are met, SSA can make a decision and grant benefits. However, benefits are regularly reviewed in order to ensure that recipients continue to meet the requirements for disability. If at any point a recipient is no longer considered disabled, their benefits may be terminated.
