What is employment discrimination law?

Employment discrimination law is a set of laws that provide protection for workers from being treated unfairly or differently due to certain characteristics such as their race, gender, age, national origin, religion, or disability. This law applies to all employers within the state of Virginia regardless of size or type. The laws are enforced by the Virginia Human Rights Act and the Virginia Fair Employment Act. The Human Rights Act makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against any job applicant or employee due to their race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, childbirth, age, marital status, disability, or other protected characteristic. This law applies to all employers with 15 or more employees, and it applies to the recruitment, hiring, promotion, transfer, training, and pay of employees. The Fair Employment Act applies to employers with five or more employees and prohibits discrimination against any employee due to their race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, sex, or other protected characteristic. This law requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to those with disabilities. Employment discrimination is a serious issue, and it is important for employers to understand and follow Virginia’s employment discrimination laws. By doing so, employers can help create a fair and equitable workplace for all employees.
