What are the laws concerning discrimination in the workplace?
Discrimination in the workplace is prohibited under California labor law. It is illegal for employers to discriminate against employees based on their race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, age, marital status, or sexual orientation. It is also illegal for employers to terminate an employee, fail to promote them, or deny them any other type of benefit due to any of the above characteristics. In California, it is also illegal for employers to create any type of hostile work environment for their employees. This includes any type of conduct or language that is based on a discriminatory factor. Employers must also provide reasonable accommodations to disabled employees and must not subject them to any type of discrimination. If a person believes they have been the victim of discrimination in the workplace, they can file a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH). This can be done online or by calling the DFEH directly. The DFEH will investigate the complaint, and if they find that discrimination has occurred, they may be able to provide financial compensation to the person who was discriminated against as well as enforce other corrective measures. It is important for employers to be aware of and comply with the laws concerning discrimination in the workplace in order to avoid costly legal proceedings. It is equally important for employees to be familiar with their rights and the remedies that are available to them if they believe they have been the victim of discrimination in the workplace.
